The Pursuit of Excellence

May 25, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Question: What can I know? What can I do? Who can I become? What should I hope for?

Answer: Anything & Everything.

We live in the greatest time of human history — a time that allows us to reach for the highest of peaks, to strive to become the best in the world, a chance to chase excellence in all that we do.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do no act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. – Aristotle

Outwork Book Club: The Brain That Changes Itself

How the Outwork Book Club Works

Posts for the Outwork Book Club will be continuous; I will post updates as I work through each book. It is a living document, because it doesn’t immediately die as soon as it becomes published like everything else.  It is something that is continuously updated and changed over time to reflect the newest information, thoughts, and ideas.

THE BRAIN THAT CHANGES ITSELF

By Norman Doidge | Link to book

February 1, 2017

My first book for 2017 is one that reflects the unlimited potential for cognitive growth. I always knew that a person can become smarter in a sense if they worked at it hard enough. But Norman Doidge insists that there is more to it; that the human brain can change itself to meet the demands of the body.

“One of these scientists even showed that thinking, learning, and acting can turn our genes on or off, thus shaping our brain anatomy and our behavior- surely one of the most extraordinary discoveries of the twentieth century.”

Learning adjusts genes which creates changes in behavior.  [Read more…]

The Mind is Primary by Gym Jones

January 1, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Gym Jones is a grueling training system that has more than just gymgoers, it produces disciples.

Maybe you’ve seen the Spartan warriors from the movie 300 and you already know. If not, the video below will provide the type of vivid introduction that you sorely need.

Despite the physicality of these actors, physical training is not the focus.

At Gym Jones, training the Mind is Primary.

“The mind is primary. The mind drags the body—struggling behind it—rarely the opposite. When spirit increases, improved physical performance is a consequence. As performance improves, spirit soars, confidence evolves and character develops.” [Read more…]

Mindset: In Pursuit of Excellence

November 3, 2016 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

The pursuit of excellence is the foundation for all success. It is encompassing and it transcends all fields, all careers, all vocations, all callings and anything that starts with the word professional.

It is the consistent and relentless pursuit of the idea of being the best that drives improvement in everything that we do.

Average is the norm of today. People have become professional “settlers” and the overcast of society is dark & gloomy.

In order to get past the barrier of mediocre, you must be willing to accept the idea of excellence and the never-ending pursuit that accompanies it.

“I am here to pick a fight with 2nd place”

The 40% Rule to Overcome Mental Limits

May 7, 2016 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

“Only those who will risk going too far can find out how far one can go.” – TS Eliot

I just saw a video of Jesse Itzler on Big Think and he spoke of his experience with Navy Seal David Goggins.

David Goggins is one of the most inspiring people you will ever read about.

For those of you that don’t know who Jesse Itzler is, he is a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of Marquis Jet. He is also an author that writes about how he mixed his life up by living with a SEAL for 31 Days.

The story of how Itzler first “encountered” Goggins is pretty mind-blowing. Itzler was running a 100-mile race as part of a six-man relay team. Goggins was simply running the race alone. He was a 260 pound, ripped to shreds, gorilla of a man running a 100-mile relay race, alone.  [Read more…]
