How to Win Forever

Very few people talk about the importance of winning. Also not mentioned is how important it is to win at something every day.

Winning creates momentum that carries positively into everything else you do.

“Despite varied opinions on the subject, becoming a winner may be the most important thing a person can do in life and does matter in very big ways. So much so that winning is the key to a passionate, productive, purposeful, and prosperous life. And, if it becomes less valued in our lives then we can say goodbye to a catastrophic loss of untapped human talent and capacity that will never surface to benefit humanity or enable people to experience being the best that they can be.”

The process it takes to become a winner requires discipline. It requires consistent, positive habits that creates the environment required for victory.

It is built on the premise of competition and the idea of consistent effort. “Do things better than they have ever been done before.”

If you want to Win Forever, you have to be committed to the idea of excellence. When your goal is excellence, then everything that you do matters.

Suddenly those small, meaningless sacrifices are big and meaningful events that enable total success.

Giving up junk food. Check.

Staying in and getting sleep. Check.

One drink at social functions. Check.

Reading new books every day to spark new ideas. Check.

EXCELLENCE = TOTAL COMMITMENT

If you want to Win Forever, Always Compete. -Pete Carroll

When you are always competing, then the idea of competition becomes less and less of a big deal. You will be more confident because your belief in yourself is strongly supported by the time you spent preparing and training. Your environment has been completely overhauled in order to support the ultimate goal of winning.

Everything matters because everything is interconnected.

Practice builds confidence + trust= Focus. Leads to “knowing you are going to win”

Winning is about completing a purposeful cycle of action with a specific intended outcome. It takes discipline and effort. It requires a strategy. It enables thought and action.

RULES TO WIN FOREVER

1. Commit to the idea of excellence — If you want to win on a consistent basis, you have to commit to the idea of being the best. Carroll uses three beliefs to reinforce this point, “everything matters,” and “its all about the ball,” and “respect everyone.” View your life holistically, and remember that everything is interconnected. You may have a goal of becoming the best at one thing but a total commitment in all of the things you do will feed the beast of success. Like Jocko Willink says, “Discipline Equals Freedom.” (wiki)

2. Always Compete — If you don’t make it a big deal, then it won’t be. The best way to win is to build confidence in yourself and your abilities. It takes work, effort, and a consistent plan, but it will build an unstoppable sense of purpose; like you are doing what you were meant to do. Like Carroll says, “You’re either competing or you’re not in a relentless pursuit of a competitive edge.”

3. Be a strategist — Thinking in terms of strategy means that you are looking past the next 20 seconds or past the next 24 hours. Winning Forever means always winning. It does not mean winning at one thing and then falling back into mediocrity.  I promise you that one day you will not be able to climb back out of the black hole of averageness. You have to think in terms of strategy and you have to be able to realize the difference between short term and long-term sacrifices. Strategic level thinking also allows you to deal with setbacks.
