A Day of Functional Movement: CrossFit Level 2 Seminar Experience

I recently completed the CrossFit® Level 2 Trainer seminar and it was jam-packed with functional movement.

Functional movement can be described as movement patterns that contribute the most to accomplishing a physical task.

One can make associations between the deadlift and picking up heavy things or the overhead press and an organized “top shelf.”

Functional movement patterns also contribute the best to fitness, where “constantly varied, high-intensity functional movement” prepare a person for any physical-contingency, the known and the unknowable. [Read more…]

Consistent Effort: The Key to Progressive Growth

When starting a training program (or continuing one), nothing is more valuable to the novice (or expert) lifter than the consistency of action.

Too often we are misled to think that intensity is the hidden force that produces long-term and sustainable change. It seems that if we apply a max effort then we will yield max results.

The same subpar results usually follow, as that belief, leads us to yet another failed attempt at achieving our physical goals; even those beyond the novice level have fell victim to this consumer mindset. [Read more…]

CrossFit for General Physical Preparedness (GPP)

CrossFit, at its core, is a strength and conditioning program designed to make one better at performing general tasks. Hence its importance in the realm of general physical preparedness or GPP.

The ascension of the CrossFit Games has led many aspiring athletes to move away from a generalist program to one aimed at making it through the qualification ladder and ultimately the CrossFit Games.

This is not the ideal way to train for 99% of people doing CrossFit. Greg Glassman, CrossFit’s ultra-hip mastermind creator boiled fitness down to 100 words in his pioneering article on fitness. [Read more…]
