The Reforging of a Leader

October 3, 2020 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

There is always value in reading the story of a Navy SEAL.

Whether it is Jocko’s rendition of Extreme Ownership or Mark Divine’s backstory of his transition from corporate America to Navy SEAL Commander.

Books of JAN/FEB/MAR 2020

They also produce the same result: success.

Success cannot always be copied but the enablers, what it takes to become successful, can be.

There is a connection between the mental and physical.

Elite military and professional athletes channel it to produce almost superhuman efforts. Billionaires use it to create empires and it shines through in the philosophies of stoic wisdom.

An alter ego doesn’t have to be someone beyond your physical reach, it could be someone that you are striving to become everyday.

Consistent daily effort is the key to becoming. Hold steady the picture of who you want to become and work relentlessly until that person is you.

The hero you want to become is on the other side of deliberate effort. [Read more…]

There is something primal about war.

Men were meant to fight. We thrive in an environment where violence trumps passivity.

Deep within our biological makeup is a tendency to fight. We must hunt, kill, win, and mate.

This instinct has driven the evolution of mankind.

But despite the outlets of today’s environment- men must fight. We must aim to compete and conquer.

Biology makes us. And war, it shapes us.

What most people can’t understand,” Heirs said, gently picking up each tiny rabbit and placing it in the nest, “is how much fun Vietnam was. I loved it. I loved it, and I can’t tell anybody.

A Professional Military Reading List (for anyone)

September 24, 2018 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

Phil Knight, the founder of Nike and author of Shoe Dog, spoke of how he was constantly reading books about combat, war strategy, and generalship to help keep him focused during the early and turbulent days of Nike.

Many of his quests to Asia were also inspired by what he read. It was books that gave him the inspiration to stand among the ruins of Hiroshima. He stayed in the villa once occupied by General Douglas MacArthur in the Philippines and was granted his request to the Republic of Vietnam to meet Vo Nguyen Giáp, their most prominent warrior of the Vietnam War. He was driven by the words of war.

Eventually, those quests to Asia opened the door for Nike’s production efforts in Japan and China and eventually Nike’s domination of the shoe game. Knight would say, Business is War. And Nike conquers all.
