Conor McGregor: The Mindset of an Irish Monster

September 2, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Prior to his first title fight, Conor McGregor suffered an injury to his knee. The injury forced him to spend most of his training camp working on stand-up fighting techniques while avoiding heavy wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu work.

Since he was slated to fight the champion, Jose Aldo, a fighter with a similar style, McGregor’s fight team was not overly concerned about the injury. They were actually very confident that McGregor’s superior stand-up skills would prevail.

Just days before the fight, Aldo suffered a rib injury that forced him out. The last minute substitution was Chad Mendes, an All-American wrestler with tons of experience in the NCAA Division 1 — the best wrestling environment in the world. [Read more…]

Consistent Effort: The Key to Progressive Growth

August 20, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

When starting a training program (or continuing one), nothing is more valuable to the novice (or expert) lifter than the consistency of action.

Too often we are misled to think that intensity is the hidden force that produces long-term and sustainable change. It seems that if we apply a max effort then we will yield max results.

The same subpar results usually follow, as that belief, leads us to yet another failed attempt at achieving our physical goals; even those beyond the novice level have fell victim to this consumer mindset. [Read more…]

Outwork Book Club: A Guide to the Good Life

June 28, 2017 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

Posts for the Outwork Book Club will be continuous; I will post updates as I work through each book. Eventually, I will encourage readers to follow along with me and add any insight or pose questions about the central themes of the book. This is what we call this a living document; mostly because it doesn’t immediately die as soon as it becomes published like everything else.  It is something that is continuously updated and changed over time to reflect the newest information.

How do you live a good life? Or even, how do you live?

These are the kind of questions that philosophers have been pondering for more than 20,000 years. It’s crazy to look back into history, questioning the different philosophies of how a man should spend is mortal life. Sometimes, it is already decided, and you would grow up to become whatever fate has handed you. Whether as a slave, a Soldier, or a craftsman forged to become what you must. [Read more…]

The Law of Attraction

June 15, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

I’ve been suspicious of The Secret for a long time. My quest for personal and professional development has taught me one thing: action towards a goal is the key factor of success.

That is why the idea of The Secret seemed so implausible to me. It seemed so fake, based on a false premise of hope versus action.

It seemed very much like a prayer. It was a shout into the wind. A prayer and not a call to action, that is how I used to view The Secret.

However, when I took the time to explore the ideas of the Law of Attraction, I became a believer. I took the time to actually read the book and not just explain away what I knew nothing about.

You see, The Secret to the Law of Attraction is about taking action because belief in oneself leads to action.

The Pursuit of Excellence

May 25, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Question: What can I know? What can I do? Who can I become? What should I hope for?

Answer: Anything & Everything.

We live in the greatest time of human history — a time that allows us to reach for the highest of peaks, to strive to become the best in the world, a chance to chase excellence in all that we do.

Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do no act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit. – Aristotle
