The Church of Bobby Maximus

November 15, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Gym Jones is the near mythical training facility that produces superhumans (website).

Maybe you’ve seen the viral videos of the actors for the movie 300? It was a depiction of regular guys transforming into mega jacked, ultra fit, Spartan Warriors.

The allure of Gym Jones is unmistakable.

The website, the access to their content, their single location somewhere in Salt Lake City, it all seemed like the stuff borne of legends.

Hailing from this proving ground is Bobby Maximus (or Robert MacDonald if you want to be boring), a giant man of muscle that is capable of producing elite level cardiovascular output on pain-inducing contraptions like the air bike, C2 rower, and SkiErg.

However, his primary weapon is his mind, which makes him seem like a literal philosopher’s stone. [Read more…]

Dan John Recommended Reading List

September 24, 2017 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

Dan John (website) is the quintessential academic strongman. He exemplifies the idea of being strong and smart, with the unique ability to write about his endeavors in a meaningful way.

His books are easy to read, yet packed full of quality information. Despite his academic background as a Fulbright Scholar and university professor, he writes like a best friend’s letter. When you read his advice, you almost feel like he is speaking directly to you. He doesn’t cite research studies but often talks about how he discovered these ideas in the early 1970s, giving him over 30 years of empirical evidence. He also competes as an Olympic Weightlifter, Highland Games athlete, and discus thrower, giving him the insights of a performer and not just an observer.

Fitness writers are rarely able to provide such unique perspectives. [Read more…]

Consistent Effort: The Key to Progressive Growth

August 20, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

When starting a training program (or continuing one), nothing is more valuable to the novice (or expert) lifter than the consistency of action.

Too often we are misled to think that intensity is the hidden force that produces long-term and sustainable change. It seems that if we apply a max effort then we will yield max results.

The same subpar results usually follow, as that belief, leads us to yet another failed attempt at achieving our physical goals; even those beyond the novice level have fell victim to this consumer mindset. [Read more…]

The Mindset of a Champion

August 14, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

There is no better example of a champion’s mindset than that of the legendary bodybuilder, Arnold Schwarzenegger. His first published book, Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder is one of the most motivating books I have ever read, and I have read it many times over.

My last experience was on a cruise ship sailing through the Caribbean islands. I purposely took the book with me because I wanted to read something that would keep me motivated and hungry, staying keen to the idea of physicality in an environment keen to the idea of excess.

The thing about cruise ships is that they are fertile grounds for the mediocre and are essentially full of those lost souls that have all but ceded to a life of absolute emptiness. Many are old, at the twilight of their lives, but many are young, hellbent on endless hedonistic pursuits.

Carrying Arnold’s book helped to keep me focused because Arnold was perhaps the most focused person that anyone could ever read about. Even at a young age, he maintained a steadfast vision for greatness:

I knew I was going to be a bodybuilder. It wasn’t simply that either. I would be the best bodybuilder in the world, the greatest, the best-built man. – Arnold Schwarzenegger

Mental Fitness by Mountain Athlete

July 20, 2017 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: The article was originally taken from Mountain Athlete which is now the Mountain Tactical Institute.

I read the following article many years ago when I was training for an elite Army school. I knew that it would be important to cultivate a strong mindset prior to the training but I vaguely knew how to get there.

I knew that it would take an immense amount of physical effort to peak for the training and the physical catalyst would inherently forge a tougher mental state. But that’s all that I knew.

The following article helped me to understand Mental Toughness beyond the ability to endure. That “it” also involved an ability to think clearly in times when you only want to think of surviving. It involves the ability to reason, to critically maneuver when you are dead tired. When you are in the middle of a mission, in the darkest of hours, and when all hope appears to be lost, that is when “it” matters most.

Those are the times when you must be mentally tough. But how do you get there?  [Read more…]
