Quiet Professional by Rob Shaul

July 2, 2018 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

I heard Rob Shaul talking about the Quiet Professional on an Art of Manliness podcast and I have since been consumed with this approach to life.

The term comes from the Special Forces community but Rob builds the idea into a holistic message that coveys several big ideas.

It is a craftsman mentality — go to work and chase perfection. [Read more…]

A Glimpse Into Mastery

February 1, 2018 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

Robert Greene’s work on Mastery is a masterpiece in itself — a complete look into what it takes to achieve the pinnacle of human potential.

Greene is a master researcher, the singular skill that makes his books tower above others (literally). He has mentioned (podcast) that he spends a year reading before he even begins to write a book. This year is devoted to intense study, going through every conceivable piece of literature, developing ideas and piecing together bits of information. Using his notecard system, he then compiles thousands of note cards into stacks of knowledge; these stacks usually become chapters.

Months of endless refining would reveal a masterwork. Ryan Holiday would call them perennial sellers, books that endure the test of time.

Forged from the hands of a master is the premiere book on mastery itself. Better than Outliers and more thorough than Talent, it is a full discourse into supreme intelligence: the power that emanates from those who are masters.

Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it’s the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: We are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learned and attentively cultivated. – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Outwork Book Club: A Guide to the Good Life

June 28, 2017 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

April 5, 2017

Posts for the Outwork Book Club will be continuous; I will post updates as I work through each book. Eventually, I will encourage readers to follow along with me and add any insight or pose questions about the central themes of the book. This is what we call this a living document; mostly because it doesn’t immediately die as soon as it becomes published like everything else.  It is something that is continuously updated and changed over time to reflect the newest information.

How do you live a good life? Or even, how do you live?

These are the kind of questions that philosophers have been pondering for more than 20,000 years. It’s crazy to look back into history, questioning the different philosophies of how a man should spend is mortal life. Sometimes, it is already decided, and you would grow up to become whatever fate has handed you. Whether as a slave, a Soldier, or a craftsman forged to become what you must. [Read more…]

Summer Stoic Reading List (2017)

May 10, 2017 by Tony Francisco Leave a Comment

2017 is the year of everything.

This is the year we answer the question: what is the right path to everything?

Humans do not inherit an operating system for life, we are instead embroiled with instincts and emotions.

I have realized this, not only in a year of managing the content for this blog, but also in the many years I have spent contemplating my life and its forward or backward projections.

The right way to do things, or do anything, has never been transparent. If you read, and you should, you’ll quickly realize that the world’s most successful people choose to go against the common way of doing things.

Take a deeper look into Western society and you’ll realize again that the suicide rates for this part of the world are astronomical, despite our cushy lives and our endless opportunities.

The way we are told to live is based on a false premise. It is peppered with hedonistic thought, it is a neverending quest for more.

Perhaps, the worst way for a person to live is to constantly chase more and more things that never create satisfaction. Look around and you’ll sadly discover, that is where most people are.

The Mind is Primary by Gym Jones

January 1, 2017 by J.R. Cambo Leave a Comment

Gym Jones is a grueling training system that has more than just gymgoers, it produces disciples.

Maybe you’ve seen the Spartan warriors from the movie 300 and you already know. If not, the video below will provide the type of vivid introduction that you sorely need.

Despite the physicality of these actors, physical training is not the focus.

At Gym Jones, training the Mind is Primary.

“The mind is primary. The mind drags the body—struggling behind it—rarely the opposite. When spirit increases, improved physical performance is a consequence. As performance improves, spirit soars, confidence evolves and character develops.” [Read more…]
